The Easiest Way to Crack Open Your Stone Crab

Home   Blog   The Easiest Way to Crack Open Your Stone Crab

What is the first thing that pops up in your mind when we say ‘seafood?' Is it salmon? Perhaps lobster or shrimp? I am sure that if you have ever eaten a stone crab claw in your life, that will be your answer. If you have ever tried a stone crab in a restaurant and fallen in love with the delicacy, you might have considered having them at home. Well, the very first thing you will need to learn is how to crack the shell of the claw.

How to crack the shell

To crack the shell you will need three things:
1. A stone crab claw
2. A hand towel
3. A metal spoon or wooden mallet

Hold the claw in your non-dominant hand with the hand towel underneath for support. Them, rap the shell with the spoon or mallet - but remember not hit it too hard, only as hard as you’d hit a soft-boiled egg. Otherwise you risk ruining the beautiful flesh beneath! Keep in mind that the claw contains a semi-hard membrane in the centre. Make sure to scrape the meat off this while eating.

The art of cracking a stone crab claw is easy to pick up once you have done it once or twice, and you'll be able to enjoy these beautiful Florida delicacies right from the comfort of your home.
