What To Do When You Crave Stone Crab in the Off-Season

Home   Blog   What To Do When You Crave Stone Crab in the Off-Season

You may notice that stone crab is a seasonal food when you try to find some, and there isn’t any in restaurants. This can really put a damper on your day and ruin your meal. It’s really frustrating to find yourself craving a certain kind of food that you can’t have. But there is something you can do if you crave stone crab. Here is a guide on what to do when you crave stone crab in the off-season.

Rules

To understand what you need to do to get stone crab, you should know some of the basic rules behind the harvesting and selling of stone crab meat. A single boat can only harvest two gallons of meat per boat; that’s quite the limitation. This—along with the strict laws limiting hunting season to October 1st to May 1st—severely limits the amount of crab people can sell.

Why Limit It?

The hunting season is limited because of the unique nature of stone crabs. They can regrow their claws after people harvest them. This makes stone crabs a nearly infinite source of delicious crab meat, but overhunting can kill off the species. If this happens, there won’t be enough crab meat for next year and possibly forever. So, these laws protect the species and the industry.

What To Do

So, there’s really only one thing you can do to get stone crab meat outside of the hunting season: buy it frozen from a company that offers frozen stone crab claws for sale online. This’ll let you eat the meat wherever you are and whenever you want it. You can even order single giant claws to get more crab meat for your meals, giving you more to enjoy!

Now that you know what to do when you crave stone crab in the off-season, it shouldn’t be too difficult to satisfy your cravings.
